Motorsport: Shane van Gisbergen's perfect start to Supercars campaign ended by Jamie Whincup in Tasmania

Shane van Gisbergen's perfect start to the 2021 Supercars season has been ended by his teammate Jamie Whincup.

The Kiwi came home second after starting fifth for the opening of two races on Sunday at Symonds Planes in Tasmania.

Whincup won from second on the grid after powering his way past pole-sitter Cam Waters midway through the first stint, before holding off his charging teammate, who was on fresher tyres.

Will Davison picked up a podium for Dick Johnson Racing in Scott McLaughlin's former NO.17 Mustang, with Waters stuttering home in fourth.

The win was Whichup's 133rd in Supercars.

Sunday's second race saw a first race win of the season for Walkinshaw Andretti United's Chaz Mostert.

The Holden driver blitzed pole-sitter Waters off the line and when on to dominate the chasing pack winning by 10 seconds.

Anton De Pasquale was second and Davison completed the podium with Van Gisbergen coming  home sixth behind teammate Whincup.

Van Gisbergen continues to lead the championship standings by 139 points from Whincup and Mostert.
