NRL 2021: Sydney Roosters veteran hooker Jake Friend faces forced retirement due to concussion worries

Veteran Sydney Roosters star Jake Friend is about to announce his shock retirement from rugby league.

The State of Origin hooker has reportedly informed family, friends and some teammates that his playing days are over, after he suffered a serious concussion in the opening round of the 2021 season.

That incident marked the 20th concussion of Friend's 14-year career and the Sydney Morning Herald reports the 31-year-old isn't willing to risk his long-term health by continuing to play.

The Roosters are expected to make an official announcement before their round five clash against Cronulla Sharks on Saturday, and have been lauded for their handling of concussion issues within their playing group, standing down Boyd Cordner, Luke Keary, Ryan Matterson and Friend for extended periods to assist their recovery process.

Cordner won't play until at least round 14, after a series of concussions late last season.

Friend debuted for the Sydney club in 2008, winning three championships, as well as playing a key role in Queensland's State of Origin triumph over New South Wales last year.

The Roosters will not be entitled to salary cap relief to cover the loss of Friend until the end of the season.

Friend signed a three-year extension with the club this year.
