IPL: Kane Williamson named Sunrisers Hyderabad captain, replacing axed David Warner

Kane Williamson has taken the captaincy of his Sunrisers Hyderabad Indian Premier League side, replacing Australian David Warner effective immediately.

The Blackcaps skipper will lead Hyderabad for the remainder of the 2021 season, with the Sunrisers languishing bottom of the IPL table - having recorded only one win from their first six matches.

"The decision has not come lightly as the management respects the enormous impact David Warner has had for the franchise over a number of years," the Sunrisers said.

"As we face the remainder of the season, we are sure David will continue to help us strive for success both on and off the field."

Williamson had previously acted as Hyderabad's fulltime captain during the 2018 IPL season, when Warner was serving a ban from the tournament due to his involvement in Australian cricket's ball tampering scandal.

That season saw Williamson top the IPL run scorers charts, with 735 runs from 17 matches at an average of 52.50.

As Hyderabad captain, Williamson's record is 14 wins and 12 defeats in 26 games.
