A-League: Door closing on Wellington Phoenix playoff hopes after Brisbane win

Wellington Phoenix hopes of making the A-League playoffs hang by a thread, after Brisbane Roar's latest victory over Perth Glory.

Brisbane have clinched a spot in the top six - and eliminated their opponents from contention - with a 2-1 win at home, leaving just one position available in the final week of the regular season.

The Phoenix can still make the cut - but not if Adelaide United win or draw against Western Sydney on Thursday.

Adelaide currently sit sixth with 38 competition points and would clinch their spot with another point of any description.

If the Reds lose, Wellington can still sneak into the post-season, but must beat fifth-placed Macarthur FC away on Friday to finished tied with Adelaide in sixth. They already hold a goal-difference advantage, but that could change if their rivals win big against Wanderers.

After winning only one of their first eight games to start the season, the NZ side have finished with a flourish, unbeaten in 10 games since April 5, but hit a pothole, when they drew 2-2 at home with Perth last Sunday.

They have a draw and loss to newcomers Macarthur already this season.
