French Open 2021: Men's doubles pair withdrawn after positive COVID-19 test results

A men's doubles pair has tested positive for COVID-19 and been withdrawn from the French Open.

Tournament organisers announced on Thursday (NZ time) that two players from the same team were in isolated quarantine after returning positive coronavirus tests.

The identities of the pair have been kept private, although top seeds Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic have been replaced in the draw, while Feliciano Lopez and Jaume Munar have also exited the tournament prematurely.

The latter have yet to be replaced by an alternate pairing with Kiwi Artem Sitak in line for a free pass into the main draw after missing out in qualifying.

"The Roland Garros tournament organisers confirm that two players from the men's doubles draw, on the same team, have tested positive for COVID-19," the tournament statement confirmed.

"In line with the tournament's public health and safety protocol, the pair have been removed from the draw and the two players placed in quarantine.

"They will be replaced by the first team on the alternate list."

Organisers revealed more than 2,500 tests have been carried out in the last week, with Thursday's positive the first.

"This is the first occurrence in which the tournament organisers must remove players, in accordance with their health protocol," they added.
