Motorsport: Horror first lap costs Kiwi Liam Lawson shot at Formula 2 victory in Baku

Liam Lawson's dream of a second Formula 2 race win of the season evaporated on the opening lap of the feature race in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Starting on pole, the Kiwi incurred a 10-second penalty for blocking, after being overtaken at the start by teammate Juri Vips.

Lawson made an aggressive defensive move at the second corner on Theo Pourchaire, forcing his rival off the track, which the stewards deemed illegal and handed out the penalty.

Lawson dropped to 13th, but showed his class and speed with a stellar final stint to earn a points finish.

The race was claimed by Vips - his second of the weekend, with Lawson coming home sixth, completing a points haul of 14 points for the round - good enough for eighth in the championship.

Fellow Kiwi Marcus Armstrong's forgettable weekend continued, failing to avoid the first lap carnage, suffering terminal damage - his second retirement in three races at Baku.

The Formula 2 season now moves to Silverstone in Great Britain on July 16-18.
