Euro 2020: Prince William joins defiant stand alongside players targeted for racial abuse after final heartbreak

Top English officials have labelled the racial abuse towards three of their football players as ‘shameful’ and ‘sickening'.

Widespread condemnation has followed the wave of online attacks towards Marcus Rashford and the two other black players who missed penalties - Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho - in their heart-breaking defeat to Italy in the Euro 2020 final.

Losing a major-final on penalties is already tough to take, but the abuse directed at those who missed has been even harder to comprehend.

"For some of them to be abused is unforgivable," says England coach Gareth Southgate.

Southgate's stern statement has been echoed by captain Harry Kane.

"If you abuse anyone on social media you're not an England fan and we don't want you," Kane has Tweeted.

The online attacks have also been the final straw for Prince William, who has also expressed his disgust via social media.

"I am sickened by the racist abuse aimed at England players after last night's match," he says on Twitter.

"It must stop now and all those involved should be held accountable."

England Prime Minister Boris Johnson has also had a go at the keyboard racists.

"Shame on you," Johnson has Tweeted. "I hope you all crawl back under the rock from which you emerged."

Manchester United star Marcus Rashford's hometown mural was defaced shortly after the loss but has since been patched up with messages of support.

Rashford has also spoken out for the first time since the final, saying his penalty "wasn't good enough.. but I will never apologise for who I am and where I came from".

Southgate adds: "It's just not what we stand for. I think we have been a beacon of light in bringing people together, so that togetherness has to continue."
