Motorsport: Scott Dixon misses podium in Mid-Ohio, remains third in IndyCar championship standings

Kiwi Scott Dixon has kept hold of third place in the IndyCar championship with a fourth-place finish at the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio.

Chip Ganassi driver Dixon, 40, finished just shy of 10 seconds away from the final step of the podium, settling for fourth place behind winner Josef Newgarden of Team Penske, and teammates runner-up Marcus Ericsson and Alex Palou in third.

Palou's podium ensures he keeps hold of the IndyCar championship lead with 384 points, sitting 56 points ahead of Dixon (328), and 39 points in front of second-placed Pato O'Ward (345).

Dixon has won one race in the 2021 season, in May, while Palou and O'Ward both have two wins apiece.

Newgarden's victory, his first of the season, leaves him fourth in the championship, 13 points behind Dixon, and 69 off Palou.

"Good job by all the Ganassi crew, congrats to Marcus and obviously Alex and Josef for the win there but we need some work, we've got to do some work," Dixon said after the race.

Elsewhere, Dixon's Kiwi compatriot Scott McLaughlin finished 12th at Mid-Ohio and sits 13th in the championship with 198 points.

IndyCar's next race is the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix in Nashville, held on August 9 (NZ time).
