Motorsport: Shane van Gisbergen joins exclusive Supercars club with second race win in Townsville

Kiwi Shane van Gisbergen has completed a Townsville Supercars double to lift his series lead to an imposing 245 points nearing the midway point of the season.

Following a comeback win on Saturday, Van Gisbergen's victory in Sunday's 250km race was a virtual repeat, chasing down pole-sitter and teammate Jamie Whincup in the final stint to take the chequered flag.

It was the 2016 champion's 50th career race win and his 10th of a dominating campaign that has the 32-year-old in prime position to claim a second tite.

Van Gisbergen joins a short-list of half-century race winners, including fellow Kiwi Scott McLaughlin who left the series at the end of last season to pursue his IndyCar dream.

Only Craig Lowndes, Jamie Whincup, Mark Skaife, Garth Tander, Glenn Seton, Marcos Ambrose and McLaughlin have more race wins than the Aucklander.

The teams remain in Townville for another week in the wake of New South Wales' worrying COVID-19 outbreak, with a further three races to take place next weekend.

Sydney's Motorsport Park is scheduled to host the following round in late August but with the COVID-19 lockdown expected to be extended that round is now at threat.

Van Gisbergen is odds-on to win the title this year of history is to be believed.

No driver has ever won ten races and not gone on to win the Championship.
