Basketball: NZ Breakers sign former Detroit Pistons point guard Peyton Siva for 2021/22 ANBL season

NZ Breakers have signed former NBA point guard Peyton Siva as their first import player for the 2021/22 ANBL season.

Siva, 30, joins the Breakers from two-time reigning German champions Alba Berlin, after also playing 24 games for Detroit Pistons in the NBA.

After leaving the Pistons, Siva played one season in Italy with Juvecaserta, before spending the last six seasons with Alba Berlin.

Leaving as a free agent, he has chosen the Breakers ahead of several other clubs around the world, coach Dan Shamir says.

"In all honesty, it was a bit of a shock for people in Europe and even internally that we managed to sign Peyton," says Shamir.

"He's a great fit for us, because of his ability to run a team and lead our group, but also because of his ability to score and create when we need him to."

Siva's signing is a welcome for the Breakers, after club stalwart Corey Webster had his contract terminated by mutual consent with two years left to run.

Webster has reportedly signed with Egyptian side Al Ettehad Alexandria.

The 2021/22 ANBL season begins on November 18, delayed by a month due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with fixtures yet to be revealed.
