COVID-19 hits sport: NZ Winter Games cancelled, due to extended Alert Level 4 lockdown

New Zealand's extended COVID-19 lockdown has claimed another sporting casualty, with cancellation of the 2021 NZ Winter Games in the South Island.

The event was scheduled for August 29-September 5, consisting of two freeride ski and snowboard competitions at The  Remarkables, and the 'Big Air' jump event at Cardrona, both just outside Queenstown.

With border security already restricting international involvement, organisers have decided to cancel the Games, with the country in Alert Level 4 until at least Friday.

"While it is disappointing to cancel the event, we know it is the right decision and we will now turn our attention towards delivering another world class event in 2022," says NZ Winter Games chief executive Marty Toomey.

The Frontier 2* and 4* provided opportunities for Kiwis to qualify for the Freeride World Tour, and were to be staged on the best two weather days between August 29-September 2, while the Big Air was scheduled for September 3/4.
