Cricket: Chris Cairns in 'serious but stable' condition in Sydney's St Vincent's Hospital

Blackcaps great Chris Cairns is in a "serious but stable condition" at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney.

Sources tell Newshub that Cairns does not require a heart transplant. Surgeons at St Vincent's will wait to see how Cairns responds to his latest procedures before any potential further options are explored.

The 51-year-old suffered an aortic dissection, a tear of the inner layer of the body's main artery, in his heart in Canberra last week.

Newshub understands Cairns underwent several operations since but did not respond to treatment as hoped.

The veteran of 62 tests and more than 200 one day internationals is on full life support after being transferred to Sydney on Tuesday night.

A St Vincent's Hospital spokesperson told Newshub, Cairns is currently in its intensive care unit and is "serious but stable".

He arrived on Tuesday after being referred from a hospital in Canberra.

St Vincent's is regarded as one of the top cardiac hospitals in Australia.
