Motorsport: Scott Dixon to start IndyCar's Big Machine Grand Prix in 26th after qualifying disaster, McLaughlin 22nd

Scott Dixon will start from 26th on the grid at Indycar's Big Machine Spiked Coolers Grand Prix in Indianapolis on Sunday (NZ time) - his lowest starting position of the season.

Currently second in the IndyCar championship standings, Chip Ganassi's Dixon's qualifying for Sunday's race was ended prematurely when he spun out on the final lap of the opening session.

The Kiwi's spin which caused a yellow flag also saw his fastest qualifying lap time stripped, having affected another driver, seeing Dixon fail to progress from round one.

"It's definitely going to make for an interesting race tomorrow," Dixon said afterwards.

"[It was] Definitely a tough day. We'll see how it plays out."

Dixon sits second in the IndyCar drivers standings heading into Saturday's race, behind championship rival and teammate, Alex Palou.

Palou will start sixth on the grid, while the championship's third placed contender Pato O'Ward of Arrow McLaren has pole position.

Dixon is 42 points behind Palou in the championship, with five races left in the season.

The Kiwi is bidding for a record equalling seventh IndyCar title, currently sitting second only to the legendary A.J. Foyt for the most championships won by a single driver.

Elsewhere, fellow Kiwi and former V8 Supercars champion Scott McLaughlin of Team Penske will start 22nd on the grid, joining Dixon in failing to advance from Saturday's first qualifying session.
