Tokyo Paralympics, August 30: Sophie Pascoe continues bid to add to Kiwi-record medal haul, William Stedman competes in long jump

Kiwi icon Sophie Pascoe can add to her already record tally of medals in the pool as the Paralympics continues into its sixth day on Monday.

With silver in the 100m breaststroke S8 on Thursday already tucked away, Pascoe returns to the water on Monday for the 100m backstroke S9.

The backstroke is by far one of Pascoe's strongest events, having already won gold at the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing, and again at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. For good measure, Pascoe also has a backstroke silver medal, won at London 2012.

The race at Tokyo's Aquatic centre begins at 12:19pm NZT with the heats, before the final at 8:21pm.

Pascoe is already New Zealand's most decorated Paralympian with 16 medals - nine gold and seven silver - and told Newshub last week that her goal is to stand on the podium in all five events she's racing in at the Tokyo Games.

Fellow swimmer Jesse Reynolds will also compete in the men's 100m backstroke S9, with his heats beginning at 12:07pm, before a potential final at 8:14pm. Reynolds finished seventh in his heat in the men's 400m S9 freestyle.

Elsewhere, Rio de Janeiro double-bronze medallist William Stedman begins his tilt at more glory.

As a 16-year-old, Stedman finished third in both the men's 400m T36 and men's 800m T36, as well as fifth in the men's long jump T36.

Along with Pascoe, Stedman was one of the New Zealand team's Hāpai Kara for the Tokyo Games, and will compete in the men's long jump T36 from 10:14pm.

Shooter Michael Johnson also makes his first appearance at Tokyo on Monday, competing at his fifth Paralympics.

Johnson will compete in the men's R4 10m air rifle - the same event that he won gold in at the 2004 Paralympics in Athens. Johnson's event begins at 4:15pm, with a final held at 6:45pm.

New Zealand sit 22nd on the Tokyo Paralympics medal table, with two golds and two silvers won so far.
