Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy couldn't hide his emotions, as Team Europe crashed to their heaviest Ryder Cup defeat in 46 years.
The 19-9 win matches the 21-11 wins achieved by USA in 1975, with the record standing at 23.5-8.5 from 1967..
McIlroy, 32, earned a valuable point for holders by defeating American Xander Schauffele, but couldn’t prevent his team sliding to a devastating loss at Whistling Straits, Wisconsin.
The point was his first of the weekend, after the four-time Major winner lost both his four-ball matches on Friday and was left out of Saturday's foursomes - the first time since his 2010 debut that he was left out of a match.
Speaking after his singles victory, a visibly emotional McIlroy has told what being part of Team Europe means to him, holding his hand up after a team performance that fell well short of expectations.
"I love being a part of this team," McIlroy says. "I love my teammates so much and I should have done more for them this week.
"I'm glad I put a point on the board for Europe this week. I just can't wait to get another shot at this.
"It is by far the best experience in golf, and I hope little boys and girls watching this today aspire to play in this event or the Solheim Cup.
"There's nothing better than being part of a team, especially the bond we have in Europe.
"No matter what happens after this, I'm proud of every single one of those players that played this week. I'm proud of our captains, our vice-captains.
"I wish I could have done a little more for the team. I'm glad I got a point on the board today.
"It's been a tough week."
