Premier League: All Whites captain Winston Reid parts ways with West Ham United

All Whites captain Winston Reid has left West Ham United by mutual consent, ending his 11-year association with the London club.

Reid joined West Ham from Danish side Midtjylland in 2010, after starring for New Zealand at the World Cup in South Africa, and made 222 appearances across all competitions during his time at the club.

"We have reached an agreement with [Winston Reid], who will depart to pursue first-team football elsewhere," the club tweets. "An incredible servant to the club over the years and a part of some of our most iconic moments.

"Thanks for everything, Winston. We wish you the best of luck!"

Reid tells West Ham TV that his 11 years in London have been a "special time".

"I have a lot of respect for the club and we've found an agreement that's good for everyone involved," Reid says.

"I came here in 2010 and have just enjoyed so much of playing for the club. It's been a special time.

"I've always felt that the fans have supported me and I've always tried to give my best for them. At the end of the day, when you're a footballer, that's what you enjoy the most - going out there and playing in front of a lot of fans.

"Over the years, that's also what I've enjoyed the most - playing for your fans, for your teammates, for your coaches and for your family.

"I just want to say 'thank you' and I wish you all the best for the future."

Reid, who scored nine goals during his tenure with the Hammers, has also send a parting message to the club's fans on Instagram.

"Thank you to everyone for the last 11 or so years," he writes. "Have loved playing in front of the fans and with teammates.

"It's been a long journey that ends now, but thank you."

Reid's 166 appearances for West Ham are the second-most for New Zealanders in the Premier League, behind Ryan Nelsen's 198 for Blackburn Rovers, Tottenham Hotspur and Queen's Park Rangers.

The 33-year-old defender made his last competitive appearance for West Ham in March 2018 against Swansea City, when he was knocked unconscious and twisted his knee, and was taken off on a stretcher.

Reid joined Major League Soccer club Sporting Kansas City on loan in February 2020 and also spent the second half of last season at Brentford, helping them secure promotion to the Premier League.

West Ham, who are eighth in the Premier League, will visit Manchester United in the League Cup on Wednesday.
