Rugby: All Blacks' back three prepared for Springboks' aerial bombardment, assures Will Jordan

The All Blacks' back three know exactly what's coming their way on Saturday night, as they prepare to face South Africa in Townsville.

Taking to the field on Saturday night in what will be the 100th test against South Africa, the All Blacks have spent the week preparing for the game plan that the Springboks will bring.

Aside from the trademark forward-oriented physicality, South Africa will almost certainly employ a kicking game designed to place the All Blacks under pressure from the word go.

It's no surprise then that coach Ian Foster has selected a back three of Jordie Barrett at fullback, with George Bridge and Will Jordan on the wings. All three players boast experience as fullbacks, with their skills under the high ball sure to come in handy against South Africa's kickers.

Speaking on Thursday, 23-year-old Jordan - preparing for his first test against South Africa - made it clear that the All Blacks were putting in the work on the training paddock to make sure that they were up to the task.

"It's probably no secret that we're going to get a few high balls," Jordan says.

"That's a huge part of the South Africans' DNA, with the ability to kick and put pressure on teams, and really apply pressure that way.

"As a back three, we've got a few plans in place on how to combat that.

"The main thing is, when the ball goes up in the air, it's a competition [and] making sure we're really up for that [and] doing our best to win it back."

And while some players might find the oncoming aerial bombardment uncomfortable, Jordan is relishing the chance to compete against the world champions' fabled strategy.

"I think being in the back three, it's part of the game, those high balls coming your way.

"It's something in the past that I've really enjoyed, is that challenge there, the ability to get up.

"I see it as a real competition. I take pride in being able to get up and win that back.

"Whether we're kicking it or they're kicking it, I know myself, Jordie and Bridgey will be looking to get up."

Aside from being Jordan's first taste of playing against the Springboks, it will only be the youngster's second time playing against any South African side.

Jordan started for the Crusaders against the Sharks in 2019 - before COVID-19 impacted Super Rugby - lasting less than 40 minutes before having to leave the field injured.
