All Blacks v Wales: Beauden Barrett to start 100th test at first-five ahead of Richie Mo'unga

Two-time World Rugby Player of the Year Beauden Barrett has retained his grip on the All Blacks No.10 jersey for his 100th test against Wales.

But the line-up for Sunday's (NZ time) showdown with the reigning Six Nations champions has no room for incumbent captain Sam Cane and veteran hooker Dane Coles, as they continue to their return from injury.

Rookie loose forward Ethan Blackadder has forced his way into the starting unit in the No.6 jersey - ahead of Akira Ioane, who was preferred throughout the Rugby Championship in Australia - while veteran TJ Perenara edges in-form deputy Brad Weber at halfback.

But Barrett's hold on the first-five position will likely dominate discussion, with archrival and teammate Richie Mo'unga staying home for the birth of his second child and joining the squad late in Queensland.

After two weeks in quarantine, the mercurial Crusaders star made a cameo appearance in the loss to South Africa and starred in last week's hitout against USA Eagles - but not enough to usurp Barrett, who showed some of his best form in his absence.

Barrett came off the bench at Washington DC to score his 37th international try, level now with All Blacks legends Jonah Lomu and Tana Umaga, and extending his world record for first-five tries to 26.

When he runs onto Cardiff's Principality Stadium, Barrett will join 10 other All Blacks to notch up 100 appearances, including current captain Sam Whitelock (128).

"It's a very special time for Beauden and his family, and it's also a special time for this team and its legacy," says coach Ian Foster.  "He's a big part of this team, he's a key leader, he's captained the All Blacks, he's vice captain on this tour and he's an influencer on and off the park.

"I can't speak more highly about his contribution as a person to the black jersey.  The chance to play his 100th test at this stadium against Wales is really special."

Cane and Coles both emerged off the bench against the Americans last week, but must continue their comebacks from the training paddock, with rookie Samisoni Taukei'aho consolidating his back-up hooker role, behind Codie Taylor, and Dalton Papalii earning the No.7 jersey in an intense loose forward contest.

Blackadder will pack down on the blindside, with Ardie Savea at No.8 and Ioane providing impact from the reserves, leaving no room for Cane, Luke Jacobson and Hoskins Sotutu.

David Havili and Anton Lienert-Brown resume their midfield combination, with Rieko Ioane partnering Will Jordan on the wings and able to slide across later into centre, as Sevu Reece lurks on the sideline.

Jordie Barrett's grip on the fullback spot is secure, leaving no room in the gameday squad for Damian McKenzie.
