Champions League: Mo Salah double guides Liverpool past shorthanded Atletico Madrid

In-form Liverpool attacker Mohamed Salah has netted twice - including the winner from the penalty spot - as the English side defeated Atletico Madrid 3-2 in Champions League.

Antoine Griezmann scored a double for the Spaniards, but was also sent off, as his team played most of the second half shorthanded.

Salah opened the scoring with a deflected effort in the eighth minute and Naby Keita added a second with a thunderous volley five minutes later, but Liverpool's defence imploded and Atletico came roaring back.

Griezmann steered home a Koke shot in the 20th minute to reduce the deficit and put his side level 14 minutes later, but was sent off seven minutes into the second half for a careless and dangerous high boot that caught Roberto Firmino in the head.

Salah put Liverpool back in front with a 78th-minute penalty and Atletico had a similar award overturned after a video review, leaving the Reds to see out the game and stay atop Group B on nine points, five ahead of second-placed Atletico.

Manchester City 5 Club Brugge 0

Riyad Mahrez scored twice as City produced a dominant away performance to put their campaign back on track.

Joao Cancelo and Mahrez netted to put the English champions 2-0 ahead at halftime at the Jan Breydel Stadium, with Kyle Walker, teenage substitute Cole Palmer and Mahrez again adding three more after the break.

Hans Vanaken scored Brugge's consolation goal with nine minutes remaining.

City's comfortable victory follows a loss at Paris St Germain in their last Group A game and advances them to six points, two more than their Belgian hosts.

Paris St Germain 3 RB Leipzig 2

Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi have found their groove to inspire their side to a comeback victory at home over the Germans.

Mbappe was the first to strike and Messi had the France forward to thank for his second-half double, after goals by Andre Silva and Nordi Mukiele either side of the interval put the Ligue 1 side 2-1.

Mbappe, who missed a stoppage-time penalty, set up Messi for the equaliser and won the penalty that the Argentine converted with an ice-cool chip, after a lacklustre performance from the club's new signing.

Inter Milan 3 Sheriff Tiraspol 1

Inter Milan have ended Sheriff Tiraspol's perfect start to their debut Champions League campaign with their first victory in Group D.

The Moldovans were unlikely group leaders, after shock wins over Shakhtar Donetsk and Real Madrid, and they remain top with six points, two ahead of Inter in third, but level with Real, who won 5-0 at Ukraine.

An Edin Dzeko volley put Inter ahead at halftime, but Sebastien Thill produced a curling free-kick from long range to draw the visitors level in the 52nd minute.

Arturo Vidal's strike edged Inter back in front six minutes later, before Stefan de Vrij ended any hopes of another upset with a neat finish in the 67th minute.

Real Madrid 5 Shakhtar Donetsk 0

Vinicius Jr has scored twice, as the Spaniards put their shock home defeat to Sheriff Tiraspol behind them.

With plenty of Brazilians on both sides of the pitch, he and Rodrygo stole the show, starting alongside Karim Benzema up front.

Shakhtar held out, until Serhiy Kryvtsov sliced a Lucas Vazquez cross over his goalkeeper for a spectacular own goal after 37 minutes.

In the second half, Vinicius took control with two stunning goals in five minutes, the first with a soft touch to net, after a great assist from Luca Modric, and the second with an individual effort, after dribbling past three defenders.

Vinicius then provided an assist for Rodrygo to score the fourth, before Benzema sealed the victory for the visitors with a strike from inside the box in stoppage time.

Porto 1 AC Milan 0

Luis Diaz has scored the winner, as Porto kept their knockout hopes alive, but dealt AC Milan a huge blow at the Estadio do Dragao.

After earlier hitting the post, Diaz netted midway through the second half, as Porto were rewarded for their dominance, missing a number of chances and barely gave Milan a sniff at the other end.

Milan believed there was a foul in the build-up to the goal, but neither German referee Felix Brych nor the video assistant agreed.

Few chances were presented in the first half, but the best fell to the home side and particularly Iran international Mehdi Taremi, who was wasteful on the night.

Taremi should have hit the target, when he steered a shot wide from 12 yards and then had a header flash the wrong side of the post.

At the other end, Milan forward Olivier Giroud opted to head across goal for a teammate, when he should have been more selfish at the back post in the visitors' best chance of the game.

Taremi had an effort go inches wide early in the second period, as Porto continued to look more likely to make the breakthrough, finally rewarded on 65 minutes in controversial circumstances.

Taremi appeared to barge into Milan midfielder Ismael Bennacer, as both went for a high ball, which eventually fell to Diaz on the edge of the box and this time he shot low into the net.
