Football: New Zealand suffer heavy defeat to Olympic champions Canada

The Football Ferns have fallen to a heavy defeat in their first game under new coach Jitka Klimkova.

Olympic champions Canada hammered New Zealand 5-1 at TD Place Stadium in Ottawa, with West Ham star Adriana Leon grabbing a goal double.

The Ferns conceded an early penalty, which was duly converted by Jessie Fleming to set the tone for the home side.

A defensive howler between goalkeeper Erin Nayler and centre back Meikayla Moore gifted the Canadians a deserved second heading into the break.

New Zealand had travelled reasonably well, until Christine Sinclair captalised in the 41st minute to double the lead.

Janine Beckie's cross was headed towards goal, where Moore and Nayler went for the same ball, but neither collected and Sinclair pounced to net home her 188th international goal.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, Canada had a third through Prince, who calmly slotted home in front of an advancing Nayler, before debutant Ava Collins won a penalty, with close to her first touch for her country.

Ria Percival's spot-kick was parried by Canadian keeper Kailen Sheridan, but the ball deflected into the net to put the Kiwis on the board.

The classy Canadians added two goals through Leon in the final quarter to stretch the scoreline in their favour.

Klimkova selected the most experienced matchday XI possible in the absence of veteran stars Abby Erceg and Rebekah Scott, but the result will be a disappointing one in her first outing.

The two teams meet again in Montreal on Wednesday.
