Football: Wellington Phoenix sign Australian youth international Luka Prso on one-year deal

Talented Australian midfielder Luka Prso is the latest signing for A-League club Wellington Phoenix.

Prso, who played last season on loan at Newcastle Jets, has negotiated a release from Croatian league side NK Osijek and inked a one-year deal with the New Zealand side.

Standing 1.9m, Prso is a combative, creative midfield talent, who has represented Australia U23 and was signed by Champions League club Dinamo Zagreb as a 16-year-old.

Like All Whites star Sarpreet Singh, Prso spent time in Germany with Bayren Munich’s academy set-up, before moving to Zagreb in 2017.

Prso is currently based in Doha as a wider squad member with the Australian national side, contesting a series of Asian World Cup qualifiers.

"We're excited to have Luka join the squad,” says Phoenix coach UfukTalay. “He will be a solid addition to our midfield for next season.

"The experience that Luka already has at 20 years old, having played in Europe, internationally with the Australian team and last season in the A-League, shows the potential and ability that he has."

Prso is excited to join the Phoenix and believes his skillset will mesh well with the squad.

"Honestly, it's a great feeling," Prso says. "I've been told a lot about the coach and the club, and I've been following the A-League for the past 10 years or so.

“Wellington have always been a club that plays good football and has amazing fans, so it's a really proud moment for me to be joining Wellington."

"I saw, last season, the type of football the Phoenix were playing and I thought they were a great squad with some talented players, like Reno Piscopo, so I'm really looking forward to linking up with those boys."

Prso is also looking forward to setting foot inside Wellington's Sky Stadium for the first time early next year, with the Phoenix hoping to return for home matches, if the COVID-19 travel bubble resumes with Australia.

"I saw the Phoenix's first game back at Sky Stadium last season, and it was definitely a sight to see the stadium full and the atmosphere so electric.

“That went viral across Australia, so when I saw a video of that, I thought about how nice it'd be to play in front of a set of fans like that - I can't wait."

Prso is expected to join his teammates in Australia when his international commitments finish up in November.
