Golf: Kiwi golfer Lydia Ko fires rollercoaster opening round at LPGA event in South Korea

Kiwi golfer Lydia Ko is currently off the pace, after an eventful opening round at the BMW Ladies Championship in South Korea on Thursday.

Ko has fired a one-over 73 to sit in a nine-way tie for 64th at the International Busan Course in South Korea. She's nine shots behind local Na Rin An, who holds the outright lead at eight-under.

The 24-year-old made an encouraging start to card a one-under through her first eight holes, before a triple bogey on the par-five ninth saw her plummet down the leaderboard.

After a bogey on the 11th, she fought back with a birdie on the following hole.

At the 16th hole, the former world No. 1 played her best shot of the day to come within a few feet of the cup off the tee - agonisingly close to winning the BMW on offer for a hole-in-one but tapping home for birdie.

The rollercoaster continued for Ko through the final two holes, finishing with a bogey and a birdie to close out her day.
