It won't matter though - the ball's free, and Ioane clears into touch for a second straight Otago victory over Canterbury!

78 mins - OTAGO PENALTY

Chance for Otago as Ioane breaks the line and throws offload out the back for Tucker! He can't hang on, but the ball's still live!

There's a high tackle on Koroi, so Otago have advantage, as the hosts go for the corner!

We'll go back for the penalty, so Ioane will have a chance to give Otago the lead again with a kick from the left touchline.

And he's nailed it! Ioane gives Otago the lead again!

(OTA 22 CAN 20)

73 mins - CANTERBURY PENALTY

Canterbury are doing their best to hold the ball here, getting through 15 phases inside Otago's half.

Prinsep runs the ball into the 22, and they've got advantage. The penalty is called, and Alex Harford can give Canterbury the lead again.

And he does, Harford lands his first kick on his NPC debut.

(CAN 20 OTA 19)

70 mins - OTAGO PENALTY

Ioane kicks from inside his own half, and completely catches Burke out. The Canterbury first-five can only bundle the ball into touch before he's taken by Otago, and gives away a lineout.

Otago have advantage, but Ioane throws an intercept to Naholo, so we'll go back.

Prinsep is warned for Canterbury's repeated infringements, the next one will be a yellow card.

Ioane lines up a shot, this one to put Otago in front - and he does!

(OTA 19 CAN 17)

We're back, as Tucker wins the lineout for Otago, and they drive.

But they won't get anywhere, as Canterbury turn the ball over - and it's Sam Dickson again!

49 mins

Otago are through as Hammington puts Ioane into a gap! He's tackled, but numbers out wide for Otago!

It won't matter though, as Dickson turns the ball over!

45 mins

Vahaakolo can't quite nail a 50/22, so Canterbury lineout in their own half.

Nel is penalised for leaving his feet, as Burke clears to get Canterbury into Otago territory.

43 mins

Otago spill the ball from the kick off, and we'll have a Canterbury scrum.

Canterbury go wide to McLeod, before being forced back infield to Darry. Punivai tries to put McLeod into a gap, but he can't keep hold of the ball.

Otago scrum.

41 mins

We're back for the second half, Burke will kick off to get things underway again.

HALFTIME - OTAGO PENALTY

We've got a 50/22! Gilbert kicks it for Otago, and they'll have another attacking lineout!

Fischli wins it and brings the ball down for Otago. Gilbert breaks the line, and throws a questionable pass to Hammington, but we'll play on.

Advantage called against Canterbury, Ioane looks for a kick over the top, which doesn't work, so we go back for the penalty.

Otago want the points, Ioane will kick for goal with the last action of the first half.

And he gets it!

(OTA 10 CAN 17)

35 mins - TRY OTAGO

Great box kick from Hammington, giving Canterbury a lineout on their own goal line. Slight delay as Dallas McLeod stays down with what appears to be a dislocated finger.

We're ready to go again, McAllister throws, but Fischli steals it for Otago!

Ioane tries to step through, but he's shot - Nel does the same. Otago go again and Vahaakolo hits the line at pace, and Canterbury can't touch him! The winger scores and Otago are finally on the board.

Ioane looks to convert, and this time he sneaks the ball between the posts!

(CAN 17 OTA 7)

29 mins - TRY CANTERBURY

Otago attack from nowhere, only for Ioane to throw an intercept straight to Mataele!

20 mins - TRY CANTERBURY

Canterbury scrum, and Dickson runs off the back from No. 8. And he's over!

That's a try with his first touch in the NPC for Sam Dickson.

Fergus Burke lands the conversion.

(CAN 7 OTA 0)

20 mins

Chance for Canterbury! A loose ball is kicked through the line by Punivai, and Mataele is in a race with Ioane to ground the ball.

The ball's grounded behind the tryline, but who got there first? The referee and TMO decide that Ioane carried the ball back into the in-goal, so a five-metre scrum for Canterbury.

19 mins

Otago scrum. Hammington feeds.

They go wide to Koroi, who looks for the 50-22 but comes up just short.

Canterbury lineout.

18 mins

Stowers runs for Canterbury, and he runs head first into the tackle. He's out cold.

We'll have a short break while we check that Stowers is alright. He's up and on his feet, helped off the field by medics.

Otago are called for offside though, Tomkinson the culprint.

12 mins

Otago are close, about five metres out. Ioane finds Koroi with two men to beat on the wing, but he can't hang on!

That'll be a scrum for Canterbury.

7 mins

Otago manage to turn the ball over, and attack from Canterbury's lineout! Otago win the penalty, as Canterbury don't roll away at the breakdown.

This is very kickable for Josh Ioane, and he'll take the shot at goal. No wind under the roof, 45m out, but he pushes it wide to the right.

5 mins

Naholo takes the kickoff, but Otago give away a penalty and Canterbury will have a scrum inside the opening minute.

Kitto feeds, but the referee calls for a scrum reset. Kitto feeds again, and Hohneck goes down in the Otago front row.

Another reset. Kitto feeds, and this time Canterbury win a penalty! Huge effort from Oli Jager for Canterbury.

Burke clears the ball into touch for a Canterbury lineout.

KICKOFF

Josh Ioane kicks off, and we're away!

7:05pm

After the minute's silence, we're all but ready to go under the roof.

7:03pm

Both sides leave the tunnel at the same time, side by side, as part of the tribute to Sean Wainui.

Several players on both sides tonight have shared the field with Wainui at NPC and Super Rugby level.

6:53pm

Good evening! We'll start tonight on a sombre night though, with both sides to observe a minute's silence for Sean Wainui, as the New Zealand rugby community still comes to terms with the 25-year-old's passing earlier this week.

*****

Kia ora, good evening and welcome to Newshub's live updates of this NPC week eight clash between Otago and Canterbury from Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium.

In what's been an up-and-down season for both teams, Otago host Canterbury for South Island bragging rights.

The hosts are currently third in the NPC's Championship, with two wins and three losses from their five matches so far. And with no promotion on offer this season after the removal of the three Auckland sides, Otago are playing just for pride.

Canterbury meanwhile, are in the middle of a very un-Canterbury season. The Red and Blacks are fifth in the NPC Premiership, eight points off Hawke's Bay in top spot.

With three weeks to go, Canterbury need results to go their way if they're to have a shot at their first NPC title since 2017.
