Mixed martial arts: Conor McGregor accused of punching Italian DJ in unprovoked, late-night Rome attack

Former UFC kingpin Conor McGregor could be in hot water again, after allegedly punching an Italian DJ in Rome.

'Notorious' by name and nature, McGregor is not new to out-of-cage issues, after being charged with assault in 2019, as well as an accusation of sexual assault that was dropped earlier this year.

In Italy for the baptism of his son at the Vatican, McGregor allegedly broke the nose of Francesco Facchinetti at a late-night party at the St Regis hotel.

Facchinetti claims the attack was unprovoked, after the pair and the Italian's wife had partied together for "more than two hours", until the former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion unleashed a punch in front of 10 witnesses.

"He attacked me without motivation, as we talked for more than two hours and we also had fun together," Facchinetti posts on Instagram in Italian.

"I could have shut up and not say anything to anyone, but since I’m here to tell you, I must say that that person is really violent and dangerous."

According to Facchinetti’s wife Wilma, who also posted to Instagram about the incident, McGregor had just invited them to another party, when he hit Facchinetti.

"Luckily, he [Francesco] was very close, so he [McGregor] couldn’t load up on his punch,” she says. "Francesco flew back, fell on the table and then on the ground.

"The first thing that came to mind was 'are we kidding? Is it a show?', then I was paralysed. I turned around and saw that his friends were holding him against the wall, because he wanted to continue beating Francesco.

"Then they took him away. I turned on the light and the guards turned them off.

"Francesco was bleeding. I wanted to help him and the guards chased us away."

Recently, McGregor got into a spat with musical star Machine Gun Kelly at the MTV Video Music Awards.

In 2019, McGregor was charged with assault, after punching an elderly man in a Dublin bar, while a year before, the Irishman threw a dolly through the window of a bus of UFC fighters, including rival Kahbib Nurmagomedov, at Brooklyn's Barclays Center.

Once holding a UFC record of 9-1, the 33-year-old has lost three of his last four fights inside the Octagon, including two straight stoppage defeats at the hands of lightweight contender Dustin Poirier.
