Motorsport: Shane van Gisbergen extends Supercars championship lead with victory in Sydney

Shane van Gisbergen has sealed his 12th win of the Supercars season, taking the chequered flag at Sydney Motorsport Park on Sunday.

The victory extends van Gisbergen's lead in the Supercars championship standings to 348 points ahead of Red Bull Ampol teammate Jamie Whincup, adding to his second-place finish in the first race of the weekend on Saturday night.

Starting in sixth on the grid, Kiwi van Gisbergen took the attack to pole sitter Anton de Pasquale right from the word go, and had moved up into second place by the end of the opening lap.

De Pasquale claimed victory in the weekend's first race, held on Saturday night, but his opening lap struggles saw Will Davison hit the front in search of his first race win since the 2016 Bathurst 1000 - a streak of 144 races.

But leading van Gisbergen by three seconds, an electrical fault in Davison's car saw him surrender his advantage in the pits.

Trailing de Pasquale again, van Gisbergen pulled off another overtake on Saturday's winner, and hit the front on lap 23 to see himself to the chequered flag for his fifth career win at Sydney Motorsport Park.

"We had a bit of luck obviously with whatever dramas they had but [we had a] perfect pit stop by the Red Bull Ampol Racing boys and got out in front," van Gisbergen says.

"Had to make some passes; again, had a pretty fun first lap racing with the guys and that set the race up.

"We have to make sure everyone knows we're here to win races and not just collect points.

"There's a long way to go before we start thinking about that, so I'm here to have a crack."

As a result, Davison was forced to settle for second place, with Nick Percat completing the podium in third place.

Van Gisbergen will look to build on the victory with the weekend's third race, held later on Sunday evening.
