NPC 2021: Wellington Lions claim extra-time thriller against Canterbury to end losing streak

By RNZ

Extra time was needed to decide a topsy-turvy match between two of the heavyweight teams in rugby's National Provincial Championship.

Wellington ended a four-game losing streak with a 35-30 win over Canterbury in the capital on Saturday night.

The Lions were well in control in the early stages, storming out to a 17-point first-half lead.

But Canterbury closed the gap to five by halftime and going into the final quarter of the match the visitors had the lead.

A converted try to Wellington prop Alex Fidow with the last play of normal time kept the home side's hopes alive, levelling the scores at 30-30.

Two minutes into extra-time, centre Peter Umaga-Jensen scored the match-winning try for the Lions.

Two senior All Blacks featured in the match as they prepare to rejoin the squad in the US, with hooker Dane Coles turning out for Wellington, while lock Sam Whitelock played 82  minutes for the red and blacks.
