NRL: NZ Kiwis great Benji Marshall still undecided over playing future after Rabbitohs' Grand Final defeat

NZ Kiwis icon Benji Marshall says he's still undecided over his playing future, following Sunday's 14-12 NRL Grand Final defeat to Penrith Panthers.

Playing for South Sydney Rabbitohs, 36-year-old Marshall was denied his second NRL premiership ring, as Ivan Cleary's Panthers lifted their first trophy since 2003 at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium.

But the curtain coming down on the 2021 season sees Marshall's future again come to the fore.

Turning 37 in February, Marshall is already the oldest active player in the NRL, and is now off-contract with Souths.

Speaking to Channel Nine after the final whistle though, Marshall says he hasn't decided on whether or not he'll carry on into his 20th season in the NRL.

"Age is just a number," Marshall says. "If you still turn up enjoying it every day at training and on the field, then why not?

"Everyone wants to know what I am doing. I will get through the next few days and see what I will do on Wednesday and Thursday.

"Whatever I think's best, I think I'll know in the bottom of my heart if it's time or not.

"We will see. It is hard to process after that sort of year.

"[I'll] see what the options are over the next couple of days, celebrate the season we had with the boys. It's tough to lose, but we did have a pretty good season.

"We'll see what happens."
