T20 Cricket World Cup: Blackcaps speedster Lockie Ferguson ruled out of tournament with calf tear

The Blackcaps have been dealt a major injury blow, with pace bowler Lockie Ferguson being ruled out of the T20 Cricket World Cup.

The 30-year-old felt tightness in his right calf after training earlier this week and an MRI scan on Monday revealed a grade two tear ruling him out for four weeks.

The news came hours before New Zealand hit the park for their first game against Pakistan, which they subsequently lost by five wickets in Sharjah.

Ferguson has been replaced by wider squad player Adam Milne, who will officially join the 15-player contingent after approval by the International Cricket Council's Technical Committee was granted on Tuesday morning.

"It's a real shame for Lockie to have this happen on the eve of the tournament and the entire team is really feeling for him right now," New Zealand coach Gary Stead says.

"He's a massive part of our side and has been in such good form - so to lose him at this time is a blow.

"However, we are fortunate to have a like-for-like replacement in the form of Adam who has been with the squad training for the past two weeks."
