All Blacks v Italy: Kiwi Azzurri coach Kieran Crowley prepares for daunting debut against All Blacks

Italy's Kiwi coach Kieran Crowley has named an experienced team to take on the All Blacks in his side's autumn international in Rome this weekend.

Crowley also named Michele Lamaro as captain for the visit of the top-ranked Kiwis.

"The boys showed a great attitude during training, showing a great desire to create something important with this shirt," Crowley says.

"On Saturday, the focus will be on our performance, as we continue along the path aimed at creating a very specific team identity."

Crowley will coach his first match since his Azzurri appointment, succeeding Franco Smith, who has moved into a new role as the head of high performance in Italy.

The 60-year-old was named two months after the Azzurri lost every match of their Six Nations campaign for a sixth successive year.

Crowley was due to take his new team back to his native New Zealand this year, but the cancellation of that tour means he will take charge for the first time at the Stadio Olimpico in an intimidating coaching debut.

"It is going to be a good line in the sand for us, to see how we measure up against them," Crowley says.

Fresh off a 54-16 demolition of Wales, the All Blacks have played 12 test matches, most since the 14th-ranked Italians last took the field.

But for Crowley, facing his home country - whom he helped win the 1987 World Cup, as a player - is nothing new, after his eight-year spell in charge of Canada from 2008-16.

"I have been through it before, I coached Canada at the World Cup and we played New Zealand," he says, referring to a 79-15 defeat in 2011.

"It is certainly a challenging one. You look at their last game against Wales - I don't think Wales played badly, but they still scored 54 points against them.

"They are an outstanding team in great form, it doesn't matter who they put out there."

The All Blacks have named a completely new starting side to take on the Italians, as they look ahead to a pair of tough tests against Ireland and France to close out their northern tour.
