Cricket: Kyle Jamieson to skip Indian Twenty20 series with two-match test series a week away

All-rounder Kyle Jamieson will skip New Zealand's three-match Twenty-20 series against India.

He joins captain Kane Williamson, who the Blackcaps confirmed on Tuesday would be rested ahead of the two-match test series starting next week.

The T20 series gets underway on Thursday morning, just 72 hours after the World Cup final loss to Australia in Dubai, with the Indians keen on revenge following a loss in group play.

Coach Gary Stead says Jamieson, like Williamson, will focus on preparing himself for the test series, although, unlike his skipper, the towering Aucklander hasn't played on tour.

"We decided through talking with Kane and Kyle that they won't play in this T20 series," Stead says.

"Both these guys are going to get ready for the test matches and I think you'll find there will be other guys involved in the test matches that won't play the entire series either.

"It's a bit of a balancing act at the moment and with three T20 games in five days plus travel to three different cities it's a very, very busy time."

While Williamson is nursing his troublesome shoulder injury, Jamieson's absence could be an indicator he is a likely starter for the first test, with red-ball net bowling likely on his agenda.

With Trent Boult heading back to New Zealand following the T20 series, Jamieson, Tim Southee and Neil Wagner look to be the preferred quick bowling options with two spinners likely to play.

Stead also confirmed Lockie Ferguson is fit and raring to go after recovering from a calf injury that kept him out of the World Cup.

"You'll definitely see that the whole squad will get match time over here and that's about us managing the workload of the players, especially with the test matches coming up for us, which will be a real key priority for us as we work through the next week."
