Football: Kiwi striker Paige Satchell determined to cement place in New Zealand's World Cup squad

Kiwi footballer Paige Satchell isn't hiding her ambitions just two years out from the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup on home soil.

The 23-year-old has been named in the Football Ferns squad for their upcoming tour to South Korea, after missing out on selection for the recent trip to Canada due to border restrictions.

But the striker's moved across the ditch, signing on with Sydney FC for the upcoming A-League women's season.

"It's super exciting to now have the opportunity to go to Korea," Satchell tells Newshub.

The Olympian is heading to South Korea on Saturday night in what will be her first call-up under new head coach Jitka Klimkova.

But Satchell has worked with Klimkova in the past, when she took charge of the New Zealand Under-17s side.

"I really enjoyed my time when I was in her team so I'm really looking forward to seeing what she can do with the Ferns and how she can change the environment."

Some would argue Klimkova already stamped her mark when she named six new faces for their matches against Canada, and she's called up another new face, Ashleigh Ward for the trip to South Korea.

"It's a really good opportunity for people to make their mark and kind of show what they have and what they bring to the team," Satchell adds.

"I think everyone sits on an equal platform at the moment. I've been pushing in recent years to kind of break into the starting line up .

The lighting quick forward hopes she can lock down a starting spot come 2023.

"My goal is to be in that squad," Satchell adds.

And she thinks she's at the right club to do that, signing on with Sydney FC after representing Canberra United last season.

"I'm hoping to score some goals and get some assists and play some quality football with the team and help us get to the grand final - because that's the ultimate goal."

Because Patchell has her eyes on an even bigger prize.

"Two years sounds quite far away but the time kind of just flies.

"I think for myself I've just got to keep challenging myself and putting myself in situations where I am going to develop, and be in the best position come the World Cup."

Only time will tell.
