It doesn't look like he's hit it, so Mitchell must be confident it's missing the stumps. But it's just clipping the top of the bails. Mitchell goes for unluck 13. Kane Williamson replaces him.
4.2 - Williamson to face. He looks to drop and run, but Scotland have a man there for that exact shot. No run.
4.3 - Fuller, Williamson looks to punch off the back foot, can't beat cover.
4.4 - Straight, Williamson defends. Great bowling from Sharif.
4.5 - WICKET! Two in the over for Sharif! He strays down leg, and Williamson nibbles at it, getting the edge through to Cross behind the stumps! A duck for Williamson, as Devon Conway replaces him.
4.6 - Conway faces up. Sharif looking at a double-wicket maiden. But he sends it down leg. Wide called.
4.6 - Straight, and Conway punches straight back to the bowler.

NZ 13/0

10:59pm

Right then! We're all ready to go. Martin Guptill will face the first ball.

10:54pm

The teams make their way out for the anthems, and then it's on!

10:49pm

So far in the Super 12 stage of the tournament, only three teams have won after losing the toss.

New Zealand will need to become the fourth, as Kane Williamson says he'd have bowled first as well.

10:40pm

As for the pitch, by all accounts it looks like a decent one to bat on.

Scotland will be hoping for as much, having chosen to chase whatever the Blackcaps can set!

10:38pm

So, the Blackcaps (playing in teal) are unchanged from the XI that smashed India on Monday.

Scotland meanwhile are without their bowling leader, Josh Davey, who's been replaced by Alasdair Evans. Captain Kyle Coetzer comes back in after missing out his side's last match, taking the place of Craig Wallace at the top of the order.

Here are the teams:

NZ: 1-Martin Guptill, 2-Daryl Mitchell, 3-Kane Williamson (c), 4-Devon Conway (wk), 5-Glenn Phillips, 6-Jimmy Neesham, 7-Mitchell Santner, 8-Tim Southee, 9-Adam Milne, 10-Ish Sodhi, 11-Trent Boult

Scotland: 1-Kyle Coetzer (c), 2-George Munsey, 3-Matt Cross (wk), 4-Richie Berrington, 5-Calum MacLeod, 6-Michael Leask, 7-Chris Greaves, 8-Mark Watt, 9-Safyaan Sharif, 10-Alasdair Evans, 11-Brad Wheal

10:33pm

Captains Kane Williamson and Kyle Coetzer are in the middle.

Coetzer calls heads, and he calls it right - Scotland have chosen to bowl first!

10:30pm

Good evening, and thank you to everyone who's stayed up to join us for this World T20 clash!

We'll have the toss and final playing XIs for you as soon as possible.

First ball from 11pm NZ time.

Kia ora, good evening and welcome to Newshub's live coverage of this Twenty20 World Cup encounter between the Blackcaps and Scotland, from Dubai International Stadium.

Thanks to Monday's emphatic victory over India, the Blackcaps are in control of their own fate in the hunt for a semi-final spot at this year's T20 World Cup.

But any slip-up could change that, with India and Afghanistan ready to pounce on any Kiwi loss.

Standing in the Blackcaps' way is Scotland, who've already stunned many to even reach the Super 12 stage of the tournament, and would love another test-playing scalp after beating Bangladesh in qualifying.

New Zealand and Scotland have met only once before in a T20, as the Blackcaps cruised to a seven-wicket win at The Oval in 2009.

Only three players return from that fixture, with Martin Guptill the only New Zealand survivor, while Kyle Coetzer and Calum McLeod do the same for Scotland.

TAB odds:

New Zealand $1.04, Scotland $9

Teams (predicted):

Blackcaps: 1-Martin Guptill, 2-Daryl Mitchell, 3-Kane Williamson (c), 4-Devon Conway (wk), 5-Glenn Phillips, 6-Jimmy Neesham, 7-Mitchell Santner, 8-Adam Milne, 9-Tim Southee, 10-Ish Sodhi, 11-Trent Boult

Scotland: 1-Kyle Coetzer (c), 2-George Munsey, 3-Calum MacLeod, 4-Richie Berrington, 5-Matt Cross, 6-Michael Leask, 7-Chris Greaves, 8-Mark Watt, 9-Josh Davey, 10-Sayaan Sharif, 11-Brad Wheal.

Mitchell 'jumped at the chance' to become Blackcaps T20 World Cup opener

Despite having never opened the batting in professional Twenty20 cricket, Blackcaps batter Daryl Mitchell has taken to his new assignment like a duck to water at the T20 World Cup in the UAE.

Having spent his career as a middle order player, Mitchell was a surprise choice by Blackcaps Gary Stead to partner Martin Guptill at the top of the New Zealand order for this year's World Cup.

But that shock aside, Mitchell's returns in his so far short opening career has shown that the decision has been the right one.

In his first stint as opener - against Pakistan in Sharjah - Mitchell joint top scored with 27 in the Blackcaps first-up loss, before adding 49 in New Zealand's victorious run chase over India on Monday.

Despite the initial surprise of being thrust up to the top of the order though, Mitchell is taking it all in his stride.

"I was talking to my wife the other day and saying 'who'd have thought this would be happening?" he says.

"It's something you always prepare for, and something that I pride myself on is the ability to be able to adapt to different situations - whether it be opening, or batting wherever in the order.

"For me, it's just about trying to win games of cricket for my country, and doing whatever I can to help us do that."

As a seam-bowling all-rounder, Mitchell has had to compete with the likes of Jimmy Neesham and Colin de Grandhomme for a spot in the Blackcaps XI since his debut at the start of 2019.

But with Neesham settled into his role in the middle order, and de Grandhomme not selected for this World Cup campaign, opening the batting has given Mitchell the break he needs to play regularly for the Blackcaps.

And when asked by coach Gary Stead, Mitchell didn't hesitate to throw himself into the challenge of facing the new ball against some of the world's best bowlers.

"You're always having conversations about different opportunities, and different roles that they said I'm going to have to play throughout the tournament.

"It wasn't really until those warm-up games where there was a real clear plan in place that this could be a real option.

"There's constantly discussions going on. For me, I want to play as much as I can for New Zealand and be able to represent the Blackcaps.

"I jumped at the chance to be able to do this. [I'm] more than happy to try and help us win games of cricket."

Mitchell and the Blackcaps' next assignment comes in the shape of Scotland, needing to win if they're to keep their status as front-runners to emerge from group two into the T20 World Cup semi-finals.

Scotland have already stunned test nation Bangladesh at this World Cup, and will no doubt be targeting another scalp in the shape of the Blackcaps in Dubai.

After his stint playing for Middlesex over the English summer, Mitchell has come up against more than one of Scotland's players, and is aware that Wednesday's clash might not be as straightforward as it appears, especially in the tricky conditions of the UAE.

"Obviously they've had a great qualifying tournament, and it's awesome to see them here in the group stages," Mitchell adds.

"They're a very dangerous team, so they understand the nuances of T20 cricket, especially with the Blast over there.

"They're obviously going to be a challenge in the next one. I know we're already starting our preparation to be ready to go in a couple of days time to be able to take them on.

"The World Cup's a funny old game, especially in the conditions over here with the pitches.

"It brings everyone closer, so we're going to have to be ready from ball one."

The Blackcaps have met Scotland once before in a T20 World Cup, winning by seven wickets in a rain affected affair at The Oval in London.
