Motorsport: Kiwi Shane Van Gisbergen extends Supercars Championship lead with second in Sydney SuperSprint opener

Kiwi Shane Van Gisbergen has extended his Supercars Championship lead with a second placing in the Sydney SuperSprint opener at Eastern Creek.

With his 20th podium finish in 26 starts this season, Van Gisbergen now leads the competition by 349 points from Jamie Whincup, with Will Davison another 128 points back in third.

Tyre strategy played a huge part in the result, as the Kiwi took only two new tyres from his pitstop, while polesitter and eventual winner Anton De Pasquale took four and used that advantage to pass his rival later in the journey.

"It's about all I had, that or maybe a couple more corners," reflects De Pasquale, who took his fourth win in seven starts at Sydney Motorsport Park this season and the sixth of his career.

"The guys said they took two tyres, so I knew I was going to have grip out of that corner.

"I did it on Jamie, then Shane on the next lap. They were pretty nice to me, but the speed difference is so much with the two tyres."

The driver face two more races on Sunday.
