Motorsport: Kiwi Shane Van Gisbergen snatches miracle Supercars podium finish after pre-race penalty

Kiwi Shane Van Gisbergen has overcome a pre-race penalty to produce a miracle drive for third at the Sydney SuperSprint event.

In the second of three races during this weekend's Supercars Championship round, the competition leader was forced to start eighth on the grid and sat 10th, after pitting midway through the race.

Van Gisbergen was still fifth on the penultimate lap, but finishing fast with fresher tyres, passing Will Davison as they entered the final circuit and pipping Chaz Mostert by 0.007s at the finish for a podium spot.

Second-placed Jamie Whincup trimmed the Kiwi's championship lead, while Anton De Pasquale claimed his second victory of the weekend and fifth at Sydney Motorsport Park in eight starts.

Van Gisbergen was fifth-fastest qualifier for Race 27 of the championship, but was relegated three spots, after impeding Jack LeBrocq in qualifying. He put two wheels off the track, trying to allow his rival past on turn five and immediately apologised, after arriving back at the pits.

The Red Bull Ampol Racing driver has qualified second for Race 28 on Sunday evening, with teammate Whincup claiming his 92nd career pole.
