National Provincial Championship: Waikato permitted to play premiership final in Hamilton after COVID alert level shift

Waikato will host the NPC premiership final against Tasman in Hamilton this weekend.

Since the resumption of the competition in September, COVID-19 restrictions have forced Waikato to play their recent home games in Tauranga and Rotorua.

After the Government's announcement that parts of the region will move down to Alert Level 2 from midnight Tuesday, NZ Rugby confirms the Mooloos can play the game at Hamilton's FMG Stadium.

"All teams have been impacted this season with varying levels of uncertainty and challenges," says community rugby general manager Steve Lancaster.

"The Waikato squad has spent the past six weeks away from home, so it is great they're able to return to their home ground for the NPC premiership final."

The final will operate under Ministry of Health Alert Level 2 guidelines, meaning a limit of 100 supporters can attend.

The premiership final is scheduled for 7:05pm on Saturday, while the championship final between Taranaki and Otago will take place at Inglewood at 2:05pm.

Waikato will return from Rotorua to Hamilton on Wednesday.
