Rugby: All Blacks Sevens co-captain Scott Curry commits to New Zealand Rugby through Commonwealth Games, World Cup

All Blacks Sevens veteran Scott Curry has committed through the end of 2022, meaning the co-captain will play a pivotal role in the Commonwealth Games and Rugby World Cup Sevens tournaments.

Curry's contract extension with New Zealand Rugby includes a sabbatical for a season in Japan, ahead of a big international programme next year.

The 33-year-old will play for Japanese club Manukata Sanix Blues before returning home in July for Commonwealth Games preparations.

Since debuting in 2010, Curry has been a fixture in the All Blacks Sevens, playing at more than 50 World Series tournaments, and captaining the side to Commonwealth gold, Olympic silver and a Rugby World Cup title.

"Every time I've been to Japan I have really loved it," says Curry.

"Getting the opportunity to play and live over there is something my family and I are really excited about.

"I'm incredibly grateful to New Zealand Rugby for allowing me this opportunity and to be able to come back next year in what will be another big year for our All Blacks Sevens team.

The All Blacks Sevens will not compete in the first two World Series tournaments in Dubai due to COVID-19 travel restrictions but will rejoin the league in early 2022.

Curry was on Wednesday nominated for World Rugby men's sevens player of the year.
