Blackcaps spinner Ajaz Patel's achievement in becoming just the third player in cricket history to 10 international wickets in an innings has sent the cricketing fraternity into a spin, with stars past and present rushing to offer their congratulations to the 33-year-old Mumbai-born Kiwi.

Speaking with Cricinfo, former Blackcaps spin star Daniel Vettori ranked Patel's heroics above Brendon McCullum's triple-century in the list of individual feats by an NZ cricketer.

"I'm trying to rank how people talk about New Zealand's greatest achievements in test cricket and a lot talk about Brendon McCullum's 300 but this surpasses that because of the fact it's so rare," Vettori said.

"He only had 29 wickets heading into this test match and can now add another 10 to it.

"It was so exciting to watch. To see as the wickets started to get closer and closer, to feel that anticipation and to see the team rally round."

Legendary Indian superstar batsman Sachin Tendulkar has called it a "rare feat".

One of the two other players to have claimed a 10-wicket haul in an international innings, Indian Anil Kumble, was quick to welcome Patel to the prestigious club.

Australia's Twenty20 World Cup-winning captain Aaron Finch was blown away by Patel's efforts.

One of the greatest spin bowlers of all time - with over 400 test wickets to his name - India's Harbhajan Singh could only stand and applaud.

Former West Indies star Ian Bishop called it the "stuff of childhood dreams".

Former Blackcap-turned commentator-Simon Doull had one of the the best seats in the house to witness Patel's magic.

Former Aussie quick Brett Lee had only one adjective.

Patel's former Blackcaps coach Mike Hesson looked on proudly from afar.

India star VVS Laxman dubbed Patel's performance "sensational", while his former teammate Suresh Raina was equally taken aback.

Former Blackcaps bowler Danny Morrison called Patel's efforts "magical", while Patle's fromer captain Brendon McCullum and teammate Jimmy Neesham were left flabbergasted.

While the Blackcaps were unable to take advantage of Patels' efforts, dismissed for just 62 runs in response - the outcome of the test will forever be overshadowed by the Aucklander's incredible individual achievement.
