Cricket: Kane Williamson cashes in for Indian Premier League return as only Kiwi player retained

  • 01/12/2021

Blackcaps captain Kane Williamson is the only New Zealander to be assured of his return to the Indian Premier League next season.

Williamson has been retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad, who have chosen to take up their option to keep him on board at the rate of NZ$2.7 million - the highest fee among the eight retained foreign players.

The eight existing franchises were each eligible to retain up to four players for the 2022 season, with a maximum of three Indians, two overseas players and two uncapped Indians.

The two expansion teams - to be based in Lucknow and Ahmedabad - will be able to then buy up to three players each from the pool of unretained players. The remainder will go back into the auction.

The rest of the Kiwi IPL contingent - which includes Trent Boult, Kyle Jamieson, Mitchell Santner, and Lockie Ferguson - will re-enter that pool of available players.

Batsman extraordinaire Williamson is one just three players the team will hold on to, alongside allrounder Abdul Samad and Indian quick Umran Malik.

Star Aussie batsman David Warner was overlooked for retention, after struggling during Sunrisers' 2021 campaign, eventually being dropped and stripped of the captaincy.

Williamson - who's been with Sunrisers since 2015 - took over the reins but couldn't save the team from finishing bottom of the table, losing 11 out of their 14 matches.

The 2022 IPL season is scheduled to start in March.
