Football: Wellington Phoenix women ready to take flight in A-League debut against Western Sydney Wanderers

For the last month, Wellington Phoenix women have been based across the Tasman, working towards tonight’s historic A-League debut against Western Sydney Wanderers.

"The girls are chomping at the bit to get out there and play our first game," says newly appointed captain Lily Alfeld.

The fixture marks the beginning of a new era, as they look to make their mark on the footballing world and the New Zealand footballing landscape.

"There's a huge hunger and ambition," says Alfeld. "A lot of us wouldn't have got this opportunity had this team not been formed."

Now the team is raring to go and coach Gemma Lewis is optimistic.

"I think it's going to be a good first game," she says. "I think we can cause Western Sydney some problems."

Says Alfeld: "I really truly believe that we are going to cause a few upsets."

Despite being away from home and their relative inexperience, they're embracing the challenge.

"I expect a whole lot of hungry girls really to take on the underdog role," says Alfeld.

They won't die wondering.

"We are kind of really wanting to be on the front foot, be aggressive and get in their faces, like we've actually got nothing to lose," insists Alfeld.

The newest installment to Wellington Phoenix are ready to take flight, as they embark on their newest journey.
