Sailing: America's Cup questions loom over Peter Burling and Blair Tuke, despite commitment to New Zealand's SailGP efforts

The future of the SailGP in New Zealand has been confirmed - though it's less clear for the Kiwi team's two biggest stars.

As part of a revamped calendar, New Zealand will host the Formula One version of sailing for four years, from 2023.

It comes at a time though when co-CEOs - Peter Burling and Blair Tuke - are yet to recommit to Team New Zealand for the next America's Cup.

But with SailGP's return locked in, Burling and Tuke are delighted to have a bit more certainty.

"It's a huge moment for our team," Tuke tells Newshub.

A huge moment for one of their teams, but whether they'll still be with another New Zealand team, is less clear.

Asked whether there was anything stopping the pair returning for Team New Zealand's defence of the America's Cup, Burling replied with:

"I think today's mainly about SailGP."

And it is, after confirmation the competition will head to New Zealand as part of a four-year deal from 2023. The excitement is even greater  after Lyttleton was thrown overboard for 2022, due to MIQ issues.

"It was really disappointing to lose the event in Christchurch," Tuke says.

"We had been excited to get back and show Kiwis this style of racing. But it's a challenging situation and it wasn't to be this season."

Christchurch and Auckland will share hosting duties - the details of that's yet to be confirmed though.

Regardless of venue, organsiers have described the thrill of being close enough to the boats, you can throw an ice cube out of your drink at them.

But the questions over Team New Zealand remain, with the pair yet to recommit to the America's Cup holders.

"We've still got a bit to work through, on that side of things," says Tuke.

"It's been a really busy year. [We] just haven't had any time to stop and reflect until the last month, since we've been home.

"It's been nice to recharge and catch up with friends and family and that's really where the priority's mainly been for us."

But with SailGP their focus for now, time is running out.
