Football: Wellington Phoenix duo Tim Payne, Clayton Lewis return to All Whites squads for Jordan, Uzbekistan friendlies

Wellington Phoenix duo Clayton Lewis and Tim Payne have returned to the All Whites side for friendly matches against Jordan and Uzbekistan this month.

Neither Lewis nor Payne have been available for the All Whites since their return to international football last year, with New Zealand and Australian-based players not considered, due to travel restrictions.

But with those restrictions eased for Australia - where the Phoenix are currently based - the pair will reunite with their national side for the two friendlies, as the All Whites build towards qualification for this year's Football World Cup in Qatar.

"It's great that we can now select from the A-League men, as well as give opportunities to players in Europe who have had good seasons and just missed out in the spring," says coach Danny Hay.

The pair's inclusion will see them miss the Phoenix's FFA Cup semi-final against Melbourne Victory on January 29 - the same day New Zealand face Jordan in the UAE.

Meanwhile, forward Logan Rogerson returns to the national side for the first time since 2016, after exceptional form for Finnish club FC Haka.

The fixtures are the All Whites' last confirmed matches before the Oceania World Cup qualifying tournament in March.

With New Zealand on a three-match winning streak after victories over Curacao, Bahrain and The Gambia, games against Jordan and Uzbekistan present another opportunity for them to find form at the right time.

"It was important to play games in this window, so we can build on what we did at the end of last year and continue to develop as a team," says Hay.

"Both Jordan and Uzbekistan are going to be challenging, but this is what we need to develop, especially when you consider the number of young players we have in the squad.

"We need to continue to test ourselves in games like this on a regular basis, as we start what could be a big year for the team."

All Whites squad: Stefan Marinovic, Jamie Searle, Michael Woud, Michael Boxall, Nikko Boxall, Francis de Vries, Kelvin Kalua, Tim Payne, Nando Pijnaker, Winston Reid, Tommy Smith, Bill Tuiloma, Dalton Wilkins, Joe Bell, Clayton Lewis, Sarpreet Singh, Marko Stamenic, Joseph Champness, Andre de Jong, Elijah Just, Calum McCowatt, Logan Rogerson, Chris Wood.
