A-League: Wellington Phoenix's Alex Rufer out to mark milestone match by entering competition's upper tier

Wellington Phoenix captain Alex Rufer will reach 100 games for the club, when he leads the side out against Sydney FC on Saturday.

The Phoenix are on a hot run of form and are hoping to use the milestone match to elevate them into the A-League's top three.

"I feel very blessed and feel really proud," says Rufer.

"It's a great milestone to tick off and hopefully there's more to come."

Coach Ufuk Talay is pleased with the strides Rufer is making as both a player and a leader.

"I think he's stepped up his game and he's working very hard," says Talay.

The surging Phoenix have won four of their last five games and Rufer is eager to keep that momentum going.

"It's important now things are going well, and we are playing well and getting good results, we make sure we capitalise on that for as long as possible," says Rufer.

Another win in Rufer's milestone match would catapult the Phoenix from fifth place into the competition's top three.

The Phoenix hope Rufer's century won't be the only thing they're toasting late Saturday night.
