Beijing Winter Olympics: Back injury no threat to Kiwi medal hopeful Nico Porteous' quest for historic gold

Nico Porteous has been forced to take a break from his build-up to the Winter Olympics, as the Kiwi medal hope nurses a back injury.

Porteous picked up the injury to one of his discs during his stunning X Games win at Aspen last week.

While frustrating, it's by no means a threat to his Winter Olympics participation, with the 20-year-old adamant there's no cause for major concern, with ongoing physio treatment understood enough to keep the injury at ease.

Time is also very much on Porteous' side, with the freeski halfpipe one of the last events to get underway in Beijing.

Qualifying doesn't begin until February 17, with the finals two days later on the second-to-last day of competition.

Porteous is currently training in Switzerland before flying to Beijing next Wednesday.
