Football: Football Ferns concede goal in opening seconds to fall to defeat against Iceland in SheBelieves Cup opener

The Football Ferns have fallen to a defeat in their SheBelieves Cup opener, losing 1-0 to Iceland at Los Angeles.

In their first match of the four-way series that also contains Czech Republic and hosts USA, Jitka Klimkova's side fell behind in the opening minute, and couldn't find an equaliser.

After an Iceland corner inside the first 60 seconds, a botched clearance from goalkeeper Erin Nayler, allowed Dagný Brynjarsdóttir to turn the ball into the net.

Despite falling behind though, the Football Ferns still managed to have the larger share of possession, with 56 percent compared to Iceland's 44.

But possession wasn't enough for the Kiwis, who could only manage two attempts on goal compared to Iceland's three, with both of New Zealand's attempts coming from defender CJ Bott.

Ultimately though, the Football Ferns couldn't find a way through, and will have to learn the lessons from defeat ahead of their next game.

New Zealand face hosts USA on Monday (NZ time), before rounding out the group stage of the SheBelieves Cup against Czech Republic next Thursday.

Iceland 1 (Brynjarsdóttir 1') Football Ferns 0.
