Rugby league: Redcliffe Dolphins coach Wayne Bennett denies interest in snapping up NZ Warriors star Reece Walsh

Redcliffe Dolphins coach Wayne Bennett has poured cold water on speculation his side will move for NZ Warriors sensation Reece Walsh.

According to Australia's Daily Telegraph, 19-year-old Walsh has become "uneasy" at the Warriors, and is reportedly eyeing a switch to a Queensland-based NRL side, with both the Dolphins and Brisbane Broncos mooted as possible destinations.

Walsh is one year into his three-year deal with the Warriors, and has the option for a further year should he want it.

But as the Dolphins prepare for their entry into the NRL in 2023, and have made signings such as NZ Kiwis pair Jesse and Kenny Bromwich, coach Bennett says that Walsh isn't on their radar.

"I'm not sure where it's come from but I can assure you he hasn't even been mentioned," Bennett told Fox Sports on Wednesday.

"We know nothing about it and we've had nothing to do with it."

A move to a Queensland club would see Walsh relocate to be closer to his family, after growing up on the Gold Coast.

At just 18, Walsh switched from Brisbane Broncos to the Warriors, eyed as the long-term replacement for former club captain Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, who has returned to rugby union for 2022.

In his 16 games played in 2021, Walsh scored nine tries and created a further 11, as a bright spark in an otherwise disappointing campaign for the Kiwi club, who missed the NRL finals.

Walsh's maiden season in the NRL saw him named as the competition's rookie of the year, beating out Sydney Roosters halfback Sam Walker for the award.

But Walsh was deemed ineligible for the Dally M rookie of the year award, after more than one suspension during the NRL season.
