Cricket: White Ferns legends face off against schoolgirl XI as World Cup inspiration reaches next generation

While the White Ferns' World Cup hopes may be all but over, there's no denying the drama and competitiveness of the tournament has been compelling viewing - hopefully inspiring a new generation of female cricketers.

On Friday, a group of schoolgirls with dreams of playing for their country got the rare chance to go up against a former White Ferns XI.

In a clash of old against young, Catherine Campbell was one of four members from the famous 2000 World Cup-winning side as part of the former White Ferns XI.

"The last time I was officially out in the middle was probably the World Cup final," Campbell tells Newshub.

Winding back the clock against a Willow's School Girl XI.

"[It] feels like yesterday, sometimes, when you take the field with those girls," says wicketkeeper Rebecca Rolls.

And although some of them haven't played for decades, there were no issues shaking off the rust.

"Emily Drumm actually impressed me with her outswing as well," says former White Ferns captain Debbie Hockley.

"That's after she'd stopped the ball bouncing twice down the wicket."

There was plenty of talent amongst their young opposition too, with the side including the daughter of former Blackcap Shayne O'Connor.

"He's helped so much," Hannah O'Connor says of her dad. "Any time I'm home from boarding school, he'll take me to the nets and give me throwdowns."

Most of these girls have hopes of going on to achieve what their opposition has done, and they're being inspired by the current World Cup.

"Every single game has been nail-biting," says Dhriti Girish. "Every single game has been so exciting."

And they bought that excitement to the crease by setting an imposing total for the former White Ferns to chase - after what looked like a lunch break worthy of champions.

"I was looking at that and wondering if a cheeky chardonnay might help the batting innings," adds Rolls. "So we'll see how it goes."

The schoolgirls took the honours in the end, but cricket, or more so women's cricket was the winner on the day.
