Cricket World Cup: Pakistan keep White Ferns' hopes on life support with historic win over West Indies

World Cup strugglers Pakistan have done their hosts a huge favour, toppling West Indies for their first win at the tournament since 2009 at Hamilton.

With just two wins from six matches, the White Ferns' hopes of reaching the semi-finals now rest with those ahead of them on the table losing their final round robin matches, then New Zealand accounting for Pakistan in their final outing on Saturday.

The Pakistanis have come to the party with their historic result over a West Indies outfit that have lived dangerously throughout their campaign, with final-over wins over the White Ferns and Bangladesh, and big losses to Australia and India.

After rain shortened the contest to 20 overs each, the Caribbean side could only muster 90/7 with the bat, as off-spinner Nida Dar produced Pakistan's best World Cup bowling figures with 4/10. Opener Deandra Dottin led the West Indies scoring effort with 27 runs.

Pakistan opener Muneeba Ali provided the foundation for her team's batting effort with 37 runs from 43 balls, before Omaima Sohail provided the winning run with seven balls to spare, breaking an 18-match World Cup losing streak.

New Zealand must now hope newcomers Bangladesh can notch their second win of the tournament over India at Hamilton on Tuesday.
