Cricket World Cup: West Indies progress to semi-finals, India fall short in heartbreaking last-ball loss to South Africa

West Indies have progressed to the Cricket World Cup semi-finals, with India falling to a heartbreaking defeat against South Africa on the final ball of tournament round robin play.

The two camps displayed contrasting emotions, as veteran Mignon du Preez hit the winning single off the ball from Deepti Sharma, with the Windies women erupting into wild celebration at their team hotel, while the Indians consoled one another on the field.

And Indian win would have put them past their Caribbean rivals, who earned a valuable draw point from their rained-out fixture against South Africa earlier in the week.

They set their rivals a target of 275, with opener Smriti Mandhana (71) and captain Mithali Raj (68) leading the charge. In pursuit, South African opener Laura Woolvardt recorded her fifth half-century of the tournament to finish as leading runscorer, as her team closed on victory.

India seemed to strike a killer blow in the final over, when du Preez was caught for 51, but Deepti was called for a no ball, leaving South Africa two balls to score the required two runs.

The result means West Indies will now face unbeaten Australia in one semi-final, while South Africa face defending champions England in the other.

The English secured their spot with victory over Bangladesh, winning four matches in a row, after opening the tournament with three losses.

After defeating Pakistan in their World Cup finale, New Zealand finished sixth with a three-win, four-loss record, behind India on net run rate.
