New Zealand win by nine wickets

Too much talent for the New Zealanders, who - led by Suzie Bates - record their first win of the tournament. Click here for a full wrap and highlights.

20th over - Bates cuts for four to bring up 1,000 World Cup runs for the veteran. Kerr finds the boundary and this game is over.

19th over - Perfect reverse sweep from Bates for four. Follows that with a late cut for four more, in full control right now. 13 runs off the over.

18th over - Missed stumping! Bates slips as she advances but the keeper can't take the ball cleanly. Bates and Kerr working the gaps, cruising right now.

17th over - The NZ batters striking the ball cleanly out there. Kerr takes a knee, goes over mid-on for one. Kerr cuts for four behind point. Lata's over costs nine runs.

16th over - Pace bowler Trisna returns. Kerr pulls a full ball high, falls to safety. Singles ticking over. FIFTY - Bates rocks back and cuts for four, great innings on her home ground. 100 up for NZ.

15th over - Jahanara looking for a breakthough for Bangladesh. The weather seems to be the only obstacle for NZ now. Will they accelerate to try and take it ouit of the equation? 50 partnership is up. No ball, Kerr can't get the ensuing free hit away. Bates advances again and finds the gap with her pull shot for four.

14th over - Kerr shuffles down the pitch, picks the gap through midwicket for a single. Bates advances and smokes a lofted drive to the mid-on boundary.

13th over - Kerr leans back and cuts deep, still just a single there. Bates follows suit, cutting for a single. Weather seems to be closing in a bit here. NZ need to make it to 20 overs to constitute an official match.

12th over - Kerr pulls Rumana for one. Bates drive to long on for another. Deft late cut from Kerr, just a single off it. This outfield still very damp.

11th over - Kerr takes a knee and slams Salma over midwicket for four. Sweeps backward of square for one. NZ ticking along nicely here, 78 runs required from 96 balls to win.

10th over - Akter up. Kerr pulls hard and fast to the boundary. She's heating up. Cuts for a single. Nine from the over.

9th over - Ritu into the attack. Thick edge through slips by Bates, nabs two runs. Kerr blasts a full toss past mid-off four to close the over.

8th over - Akter putting the clamps on, beats Kerr's bat. Kerr defends the final ball and that's a maiden over.

7th over - Bates sits back and pounds one through midwicket for four. OUT - Devine tries to pull a ball that was far too full and it collects the top of her off stump. Big wicket for Bangladesh.

Sophie Devine b Salma Khatun 14 (16b 1x4 0x6)

6th over - Power play is over. Akter enters the Bangladesh attack. Tight lines to start with, taking the pace off the ball seems to be paying dividends. Spin from both ends now. Just two runs off the over.

5th over - First bowling change sees Salma up for some spin. Lovely drive off the back foot by Bates, they come back for two. Devine with a hefty edge through slips, they run three.

4th over - Trisna back for her second over. Bates advances and gets a healthy top edge as she attempts to drive, they'll grab three down to third man. Five off the over.

3rd over - Bates finds the gap through cover, returns for two runs. Too much width and Bates punishes one past point for four.

2nd over - Trisna with the ball. On the mark early, four dot balls. They scramble through for the lone single off the over, great start by Trisna.

1st over - Here we go. Jahanara gets the ball first for Bangladesh. Devine plays one off the pads for two to open the NZ account. Devine pulls a short one for four, easy money for the skipper.

INNINGS BREAK - Solid effort with the bat from Bangladesh, who will be pleased with that total considering the challenging conditions. NZ run chase will begin shortly.

Amy Satterthwaite finishes with 3/25 to lead the NZ wicket-takers, while Frankie Mackay was excellent with 1/24 in her six-over spell.

27th over - Final over and Satterthwaite has the honours. Square drive for one by Lata. Alam sweeps for another.  OUT - Alam sweeps over the top for a single and backs up too far a second, Melie Kerr's throw is right on the money and Lata is out at the non-striker's end.

Jahanara Alam run out (AC Kerr/Satterthwaite) 2 (3b 0x4 0x6)

One off the final ball, and that will do us.

26th over - Mackay for her final over. Salma pressuring the field again, they sneak two runs. OUT - Salma got a bit over confident there, never a run and she's paid for it with her wicket after some sharp work backing up by Mackay to reel in a poor throw.

Salma Khatun run out (Bates/Mackay) 9 (10b 0x4 0x6)

Alam sweeps and misses, ball strikes her front pad. Big appeal from Mackay, umpire says no but they'll review. Nope, that's missing leg stump. Not out.

Mondal with a thick edge and they sprint through for three runs to end the over.

25th over - Melie Kerr in to bowl her final over. Late cut brings two runs. Bottom edge sneaks past the keeper, two more. Lovely reverse sweep and they run three, fantastic running there.

24th over - Mackay to bowl. OUT - Brilliant work from Mackay, who fields and fires back to to hit the stumps and beat Hoque's bat by an inch. Huge wicket.

Fargana Hoque run out (Mackay) 52 (63b 1x4 0x6)

Two new battters in here now, ideal for NZ. Mackay bats the bat, she's threatened all afternoon. A wicket and just one run off the over.

23rd over - Into the final five overs now. Satterthwaite to bowl, well cut by Hoque for two. She'll be crucial to Bangladesh's cause through this final stage here. Scrambles another two to bring up an excellent half century. Ritu goes hard at it, slop sweep to deep mid-on for four. OUT - No purchase on the very next ball and it's a comfortable catch for Devine at mid off.

Ritu Moni c Devine b Satterthwaite 4 (2b 1x4 0x6)

22nd over - Hayley Jensen return to the bowling crease. Well pulled, two runs to deep square leg. More intent here from Bangladesh, working the conservative field well. OUT - Mostary looks to go over the top but it's straight down Maddy Green's throat on the midwicket boundary.

Sobhana Mostary c Green b Jensen 13 (21b 1x4 0x6)

21st over - Melie Kerr for NZ. Sobhana advances and plays a glorious cover drive for four, the first boundary since the 14th over. Eight off the over.

20th over - Jess Kerr again for NZ. The Ferns happy to concede singles here, as the innings enters its final stretch. Bottom edge to the keeper but Martin can't hold a tough chance.

19th over - Satterthwaite searching for her third wicket. Urgency has increased in the field, nothing but suingles in the offering for Bangladesh. Leading edge narrowly misses the stumps, two runs.

18th over - Jess Kerr return for NZ. Just seven runs off the last three overs for Bangladesh. Much better line and length from Kerr. Maiden over.

17th over - Satterthwaite back.  Almost a caught and bowled chance, ball drops just short. Three off the over.

16th over - Mackay again. Just three off the over, as the pressure mounts on Bangladesh.

15th over - OUT - Satterthwaite's first delivery of the game bring a wicket, with Joty caught behind trying to cut, well taken by wicketkeeper Katey Martin.

Nigar Sultana c Martin b Satterthwaite 11 (13b 1x4 0x6)

OUT - There's another one! This bowling change has really paid off, Satterthwaite spinning one inside the edge of Ahmed for her second wicket of the over.

Rumana Ahmed b Satterthwaite 1 (4b 0x4 0x6)

14th over - Mackay again, both she and Kerr doing a superb job of stealing back the momentum here. Hoque eases some pressure with a lofted drive over mid off, one bounce for four. Hoque drives straight, they take two.

13th over - Melie Kerr to bowl her fourth over. Hique nudges behind square for a single. Wrong'un deceives Hoque, oulls one straight into the pitch. Great over, just one from it.

12th over - Mackay beats the outside edge of Hoque. She's giving nothing for the Bangladesh batters to work with. Pretty cover drive from Hoque, she'll grab two runs. Five off the over.

11th over - Melie Kerr on the money, just four runs off the over. NZ starting to put the clamps on.

10th over - Frankie Mackay into the attack with some off-spin. OUT - MacKay induces the top edge and Tahuhu does well to take a tricky one at backward square leg.

Shamima Sultana c Tahuhu b Mackay 33 (36b 4x4 0x6)

9th over - Melie Kerr again. Shamima punches for a single, Hoque sweeps for another. Both looking very comfortable in the middle.

8th over - Hoque lofts Jensen again over midwicket for two. The NZ bowlers have been pitching the ball far too short and Bangladesh are making them pay.

7th over - Spinner Melie Kerr in for her first over of the day. Beautiful ball beats both batsman and keeper. Four runs from the over.

6th over - Five overs down and the power-play is over. Jess Kerr back for her third. Lofted pull shot from Shamima who finds the boundary again, plenty of purpose from these two.

5th over - Hayley Jensen into the attack for NZ now. Cut shot drops just short of point. Soggy outfield robs Shamima of a boundary by a matter of inches. Bangladesh continue to pierce the NZ in-field, another cut shot brings three runs.

4th over - Jess Kerr getting pleny of swing here early. Still very damp out there on the University Oval. Better over for NZ, just three runs from it.

3rd over - Confident start from Bangladesh, looking very assured. Tahuhu short again, Hoque punches it through the covers for two. Shamima kneels and blasts one aerial and into cow-corner Ross Taylor-style for four. Shamima pulls a gimme for four more.

2nd over - Jess Kerr starts off with a wide, albeit a harsh one. Shamima reaches and cuts for four. Hoque pulls again, runs through for two.

1st over - Lea Tahuhu gets us underway. Hits her length early, one half-hearted appeal as the ball strikes the pad. Shamima gets Bangladesh on the board with a single through mid-wicket. Hoque pulls strongly to the boundary.

3:06pm - Couple of changes to the NZ XI, with Frankie MacKay and Hayley Jensen in.

New Zealand: 1. Suzie Bates 2. Sophie Devine (capt) 3. Amelia Kerr 4. Amy Satterthwaite 5. Lea Tahuhu 6. Maddy Green 7. Frances Mackay 8. Katey Martin (wk) 9. Hayley Jensen 10. Jess Kerr 11. Hannah Rowe

3:06pm - Interesting tidbit - The White Ferns have never played Bangladesh in an ODI. How about that.

3:03pm - Anthems are underway, we'll be into the cricket in no time.

2:45pm - New Zealand have won the toss and will bowl first.

2:35pm - We're back in action, with confirmation a 28-over match will be played starting at 3pm. A toss is expected soon.

2:07pm - Encouraging news, cricket fans - the covers are off! The next pitch inspection will take place very shortly.

12:31m - Rain is still falling at Dunedin, but there is still hope the weather will break later this afternoon, allowing a reduced-overs match. Stay tuned for more news...

11:10am - Play has been delayed by rain at University Oval. Expect an update in an hour, bearing in mind groundstaff would probably need another hour to prepare the pitch for play.

Pool games have no reserve days, so if we can't beging play by 4pm

10:37am - Bad news from Dundein, where rain has delayed the coin toss. Some of the worst winters of my life have been summers in Dunedin... what were the organisers thinking?

Suzie Bates must be sitting in the pavilion, just shaking her head. Shared points from a no-contest would be absolute disaster for the White Ferns.

There's a big indoor stadium just down the road, let's take the game there!

*****

Kia ora, good morning and welcome to Newhub's live coverage of the Cricket World Cup match between the White Ferns and Bangladesh at Dunedin's University Oval.

After a dream build-up to their home tournament, the NZ women suffered a heartbreaking final-over loss to West Indies in their opening match at Mt Maunganui on Friday, leaving them with a steep mountain to climb, if they hope to make the semi-finals.

Defeat to lowly Bangladesh would surely end those hopes.

Despite a magnificent century to captain Sophie Devine and needing only six runs from the final over with three wickets in hand, the NZ batting order was dismissed with a ball to spare and failed to chase down the 260 runs required.

In their opening match, the Bangladeshis fell to South Africa by 32 runs, but were still in the contest halfway through their 208-run chase for victory.

TAB Odds: NZ $1.001, Bangladesh $16

White Ferns: Sophie Devine (c), Amy Satterthwaite (vc), Suzie Bates, Maddy Green, Brooke Halliday, Hayley Jensen, Fran Jonas, Jess Kerr, Amelia Kerr, Frances Mackay, Rosemary Mair, Katey Martin, Georgia Plimmer, Hannah Rowe, Lea Tahuhu

Bates relishes Dunedin homecoming as NZ hunt World Cup bounce back

White Ferns batter Suzie Bates hopes to mark her first hometown appearance with victory, as New Zealand look to register their first win of this year's Women's Cricket World Cup.

Bates, 34, has represented her country a staggering 262 times across both one-day and Twenty20 cricket, but has never played a single international on her home ground of Dunedin's University Oval.

The NZ opener came agonisingly close to finally taking the field in front of friends and family in a 2020 T20 against South Africa, but rain spoiled the occasion.

Despite forecasts of scattered showers, Bates will hopefully step out on her home ground on Monday, when the White Ferns face Bangladesh.

"It'll be really special," Bates says. "The fact I've never played here for the White Ferns makes it that much more special.

"In a home World Cup, to be able to have some of my family and friends up on the bank, I talked about it with Katey Martin this morning.

"Steve Martin and Wendy Martin have been like second cricket parents to me. They sit on the same spot, whether we're playing age-group cricket, whether we're playing for the [Otago] Sparks and now for New Zealand.

"We'll just have that real comfort of knowing what this ground's about, looking up and seeing the people that  have been there since we U15s.

"It's going to be a pretty cool moment to sing the national anthem, and be at your home ground. Considering it's the first time tomorrow, it's going to be a pretty cool day."

But the White Ferns enter their second match of the World Cup's group stage, after falling to a surprise defeat in their tournament opener, falling to the West Indies by three runs at Mt Maunganui.

For Bates and the team, the quick turnaround between games is a blessing, allowing the White Ferns little opportunity to dwell on what's already been, as they concentrate on what's to come.

"I think it does help. Obviously, that close loss was a little bit heartbreaking for everyone, getting so close and being disappointed at the end, but the we were on a place to Dunedin.

"That's going to be the nature of this tournament for us the whole way through - we play and then the next day, we're on to a new venue.

"I think it works in our favour. We're now in Dunedin, [against] a different opposition. Obviously, we talked about that game and some of the [lessons] we can take from it, but we've just got to move on and take one game at a time.

"That [starts] tomorrow with Bangladesh."

Bates hopes to fare better in New Zealand's second game, after an unlucky end to her evening on Friday.

In the early overs of New Zealand's run chase, a Sophie Devine straight drive was deflected back onto the stumps at the non-striker's end, catching Bates short of her ground and run out for just three.

"I'm just hoping that little bit of bad luck means tomorrow I get all the luck," Bates jokes.

"[Coach] Bob Carter did say I was quite far out of my crease, but Sophie hits the ball quite hard straight. Maybe I can just sit back on my heels, if I see her shaping that way.

"It is what it is, it happens in cricket. Obviously, I was disappointed not to get more of a bat, but there's plenty more cricket to come.

"I just can't wait to get out there tomorrow."
