NRL 2022: Melbourne Storm prevail over fast-finishing South Sydney Rabbitohs in golden-point thriller

Melbourne Storm have escaped with a 15-14 win over South Sydney Rabbitohs in a scintillating finish to their NRL contest at AAMI Stadium.

With the Storm leading 14-0 into the final 10 minutes, Souths struck back with three quick tries in nine minutes, setting the stage for a mammoth last-gasp two-point field goal from Rabbitohs star Latrell Mitchell from 48 metres out to force overtime.

Outstanding Storm fullback Ryan Papanhuyzen then slotted the gamewinning field goal in the third minute of extra time, as coach Craig Bellamy celebrated his 500th NRL match in style.

Filling in for injured Kiwis hooker Brandon Smith, Harry Grant was one of Melbourne's best, leading the team in run metres and making 40 tackles.

He also laid on two of the Storm's opening tries, kicking crossfield for Xaiver Coates to open the scoring, then breaking clear for a 60-metre burst to put Cameron Munster over the line 10 minutes later.

The Rabbitohs will rue a woeful first-half display, completing just 50 percent of their sets and making 10 tackles.

Brilliant Cody Walker helped spark them to life to set up their first try for Alex Johnston. After Junior Paulo scored in the corner, Mitchell found Campbell Graham with a superb pass for their second, before tying the game with his monster two-point field goal at the buzzer.

But Papenhuyzen's extra-time effort consigned the Rabbitohs to their second straight loss.
